One of the highlights of the year in this region is Le Grand Pavois – the annual international boat show at La Rochelle. La Rochelle is only 1hr 15 from Foussais and this makes it a great day out.
While the boat show itself is well worth a visit, especially if you are of a nautical bent, it is really the Voiles de Nuit that we mainly go to see. This is usually held on the last Saturday of the week-long exhibition and consists of a spectacular light, sound and firework show held on the banks of the ancient harbour. There is also a beautiful parade of boats in and out of the “twin towers” of the old port, accompanied by haunting music.
Everyone crowds on the banks with a picnic and enjoys the show in great spirit. It really is a fantastic occasion and one not to be missed.
