15 mins drive from Foussais

Fontenay-le-Comte is the nearest big town, around 15 mins drive from Foussais, with a population of around 15,000. Here you will find a blend of the historical, with the church and Chateau de Terre-Neuve, and the modern, with big supermarkets, “high-street” shops, cinemas etc. Fontenay will cater for most of your needs in terms of shopping, services and entertainment.

Mervent

The beautiful Mervent forest is a great place to go for walks, enjoy watersports or just sit and watch the abundance of wildlife.

Vouvant

15 mins from Foussais

Vouvant, a picturesque walled village, is a lovely place to explore. There is an ancient stone tower on a hill and many small shops, cafés and restaurants. There are often resident artists who display their work in the streets.

Niort

Niort is a large town, with major shopping centres and a big undercover market. There is a chateau and some beautiful historic buildings and bridges. Niort is also the closest train station which is on the TGV network.

La Rochelle

La Rochelle is a beautiful city, steeped in history. There is a huge harbour and the iconic “twin towers” are instantly recognisable. The Aquairium is a great place to visit, and there is a cinema that regularly shows english films in english! Shopping is great in La Rochelle, from the city-centre streets to the huge out-of-town complexes. The nearby Ile de Ré is also a must-visit.  Flights are available from La Rochelle to many UK destinations, including London, Manchester and Birmingham. See the airport website for more details.

Nantes

Nantes is the sixth-largest city in France and as such has all the facilities of a major city. Shops, entertainment, historical buildings… you’ll find everything you need in Nantes. There is a TGV train station here, and Nantes INternational Airport flies to dozens of destinations, including the UK. One highlight to look out for is the magnificent Machines d’Ile – ride in a mechanical elephant on the banks of the Loire.
